Rolling Stone Interviews RuPaul

Full Interview: Rolling Stone

As we approach the 10th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Rolling Stone interviewed Ru. They asked if he’s changed his mind on whether drag will ever become mainstream.

We’ve seen so many great queens have thriving careers after appearing on Drag Race, including Trixie and Katya, who now have their own Viceland TV series. You’ve said in the past that drag can never be mainstream: Do you feel that way even after seeing your contestants become bigger pop culture figures?
Everybody has this idea of what “mainstream” is. And when you understand what’s happened politically in this country, you realize how primitive we are as people. Even the things that are happening every day in the paper, you think, “Really?” Humans on this planet like to pretend we’re so advanced, but we are fucking Neanderthals. We are so primitive where the idea that a human being can not make the same amount of money as another human being. There’s fucking slavery still.

So drag becoming mainstream? Honey, please. That’s not going to happen, mainly because the mainstream wants you to choose an identity so they can sell you beer and shampoo. That’s just the way it is. In drag, we are shape-shifters. We don’t hear the rules. We change every day. People need a box to understand how to navigate their lives. They need a grid to go “Oh, I’m here and that’s there.” They’re not fluid in the way of saying “I’m both male, female, black, white. I’m earth. I’m united.” Drag says, “I’m fucking everything.” Not literally fucking everything. I don’t want that to be misunderstood [Laughs].

Sasha Velour Helps Google Celebrate Marlene Dietrich’s Birthday

Original Post: Google

We’ve all seen Sasha’s tribute to Marlene during Snatch Game in Season 9, now check out her doodle on the google home page to celebrate Marlene’s 116th birthday

Dietrich’s Doodle was illustrated by artist Sasha Steinberg who captured her mid-performance, suited up in her gender-bending tux and top hat. Steinberg, who is also a drag performer under the name Sasha Velour and winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race (Season 9), counts Dietrich as a major influence in creating their drag alter ego.

“She was a wild original!” says Velour. “Despite the pressures of the time, she followed her own course, especially in terms of politics and gender. As a drag queen, that’s particularly inspiring to me. Plus, she just had this power to her…in every role she’s mysterious and strong, brilliant. That’s what I aspire to be when I step on the stage.”

You can catch Sasha again when she returns to Australia for Dragfest 2018

Is Cher Headlining Mardi Gras 2018?

We’ve been doing a bit of snooping this morning and we think we’ve cracked the code! A little while ago Cher teased that she was going to be taking a trip in March.

A google search tipped off by a suspicious Facebook post this morning reveals a VERY interesting article posted a few hours ago by KIIS FM:

It looks like someone jumped the gun though, because the story is mysteriously absent from the KIIS website!

The excerpt from google is pretty detailed, it’s not April 1st, there’s a good chance that this is happening!

You can start off your Mardi Gras weekend the right way with us. We’ve got Willam, Aja and TS Madison coming to turn the party for you!

Swagger Mardi Gras Edition went on sale yesterday, make sure you don’t miss out on tickets!

One Sweet Day, Just Not in February

This will probably cause you to experience some Emotions, but Mariah Carey has rescheduled her 2018 tour from February to October. Hold on to your tickets because you’ll still be able to experience the Fantasy, unless you live in Perth, as they were unable to secure a date for that city which is a bit of a Heartbreaker.

If you’re wondering what to do with yourself in February now that Mariah’s said she’ll be spending it Without You, Alyssa Edwards is here to say I’ll Be There.

The First Same Sex Marriages Happened Over The Weekend

Filipino President Supports Same Sex Marriage

Full Story: Pink News

The President of the Philippines has offered support for same-sex marriage and has said he plans to set up a LGBT commission.

Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday announced plans for the commission as he spoke at the 7th LGBT year-end gathering at Azuela Cove.
He asked for members of the LGBT community to put forward nominees for the commission.

The President asked for the “brightest” most “honest” and “hardworking” LGBT people to be put forward for the roles

Also speaking at the event, Dueterte also came out in support of same-sex marriage.

He said he “doesn’t have a problem with a man marrying a man”.

He also said “we will have to change the law”.

A statement from Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said: “President Duterte is the president of all Filipinos. This administration has long espoused inclusivity and sensitivity. We make no distinction. We are all Filipinos enjoying our rights, freedom and equality before the law.”

This is a stark contrast from comments made earlier this year by Duterte.

The President earlier this year claimed prisoners are ‘beyond reform’ because they have turned gay.

Forget Elf On The Shelf

It’s unclear whether he’s been naughty or nice this year, we’ll need to do some thorough investigation!

He’s DEFINITELY invited to our Christmas Party!

This weekend we kick off celebrations at our bar in Adelaide, Mary’s Poppin. Our Mary’s Divas will be bringing you more Christmas shows than you can shake a candy cane at.

We’re Still Waiting Calvin!

In The Dark family DJ Filip with an F has had quite the weekend, we were barely able to tear him away from his phone to play his weekly sets at Mary’s Poppin! He’s been getting calls from all over the world about his shout out to Calvin Harris to keep his promise to remix his favourite Spice Girls track. We managed to get Filip’s attention for 5 minutes to ask him a few questions.

This whole thing has completely blown up! Did you expect this kind of reaction?

Not at all. I thought I’d post my text to Calvin on Facebook for a laugh. All of a sudden it blew up within minutes. My friend told me to tweet it as well… and now here we are over 6K retweets later!

We’ve been following along with all the news posts an interviews, what’s been the most surprising for you?

I should say that Im surprised that everyone else wants this too – but Im not at all. We all have a thirst for nostalgia – and the Spice Girls bring us all back such joyful memories. Thats what I pride my musical sets on as a deejay at Mary’s Poppin (my home residency with ITD), is that we provide hours of not just music, but a journey down memory lane, and a soundtrack to happier times.

And you got to speak with Emma Bunton?

Yes. Im still recovering from that. She said she loved me twice. Im done.

Now the important question, has Calvin replied?

Not yet. It’s the most asked question I’ve had in the past 3 days. I have no answer for this. He is either staying quiet hoping it all goes away, or he’s secretly up to something.

Why do you think he’s staying silent? Surely he’s heard about it by now?

By now, he has received over 28K notifications on twitter alone regarding the subject. Its been in TIME Magazine, hit the BBC, The Sun, Dalymail, E! News, MTV, Gay Times, and hundreds of more outlets. Even Perez Hilton is tweeting! He is well and truly aware of this issue. Now Baby Spice is rallying up behind it.

Im dreaming that he’s sorting out the technicalities and will drop it on us out of his silence!

What’s next for you? What are you gonna do with your 15 minutes of fame?

Well, if it happens, clearly a launch party for Calvin’s track at Mary’s Poppin – that only makes sense. Next step – I’m not sure, what does someone do with their 15 minutes of internet fame? I think In The Dark should give me a web-series – that would break the internet!

You can catch Filip playing every Friday and Saturday at Mary’s Poppin, our bar in Adelaide!

You can listen to Filip’s chat with Spice Girl, Emma Bunton below.

Calvin’s Marriage Equality Promise

Australia’s biggest Spice Girls fan and In The Dark family DJ, Filip with an F reached out to Calvin Harris last night after the marriage equality bill was passed in the House of Representatives.

5 years ago the two met backstage at Stereosonic side show, we asked Filip to tell us about how it all came about!

In Aug of 2012 I suffered a really severe injury that almost ended my life. It was one of those typical “coward punch” situations where I was hit in the head 12 times by strangers and it inflicted a lot of damage. By December when the physical wounds had healed and I could get back out and about my best friend Dani convinced me to tag along with a lot of our deejay friends on the Stereosonic tour to a few locations (Adelaide, Sydney & Brisbane), I was up for the adventure and holiday – and it was a way to get me active again!

On the Sydney stop, Calvin Harris did a side show at Marquee. A crew of us came along and hung out in the “library” which was basically set up as a backstage bar / green room.

I honestly cant specifically remember what turned the conversation to the topic of wedding songs, but I chimed in and said mine would be Spice Girls “2 Become 1”. Everyone laughed and said that would be a total gay bridal waltz anthem. But Calvin was shocked when we told him that gay marriage wasnt a reality in Australia yet. I vividly remember his face when he said “No way, I totally thought it was?”, he was in genuine shock.

I then said to him when they finally legalise it he can remix 2 Become 1 then to celebrate. He 100% would have thought it was a laugh, and lets be honest, Im 1 in a million kind of conversations he’d probably have like this. But he shook my hand on the deal. And I have been waiting for this pot of gold at the end of this proverbial rainbow.

This isnt something Ive just brought up now either, many around me have heard me reiterate the story over the years, because I want my remix!

I just didn’t realise how crazy viral this would go overnight, it seems like the world wants it too!

They snapped a selfie, Calvin put his number in Filip’s phone and now we’re all waiting with baited breath for this remix!

You can catch Filip playing his favourite Spice Girls songs along with your favourite pop tunes at Mary’s Poppin every Friday and Saturday!

Trixie Mattel’s Christmas Single

Your favourite life sized Barbie doll has been back in the recording studio to bring you a fun little tune in time for Christmas. Trixie actually played all the instruments on this track!

Available now on iTunes.

You can catch Trixie when she comes out to Australia next year for her new show Accessories Sold Separately. She’s also just been announced on the Comedy Queens tour!

Amazon Australia is now LIVE!

Australia’s $300 billion retail sector will face its reckoning on Tuesday after global e-commerce giant Amazon ended months of speculation by flicking the switch on its local website.

Amazon has started taking orders and shipping products from its warehouse in Melbourne’s east.

Head over and check it out here.

“Millions” of products are available across 23 categories, including consumer electronics, sports and outdoor goods, toys, home improvement and tools, and clothing and accessories, it said.

Amazon has launched with both its own retail offer, in which it sells and ships items direct to customers, and its “third-party” marketplace with allows other businesses to sell through Amazon’s website.

Parliamentary Proposal

Tim Wilson asked his partner Ryan Bolger, who was sitting in the public gallery to marry him during his speech on the historic bill today. The response was an immediate Yes. It will be the first proposal to be recorded in Hansard, Australia’s official account of Parliament. Earlier, Mr Wilson choked back tears as he described the negative reactions of some friends when he initially asked his Ryan to marry him years ago.

“Many simply did not know how to react, many SMSs went unresponded, in conversation, some people politely changed the topic or fell silent entirely,” he said. “For a while Ryan kept pushing for an engagement party. The truth was, I kept delaying it, perhaps wrongly because the strong message I took from so many people’s silence was that no one would come. On informing one person, they responded ‘Why bother’.”

Seventy-seven MPs are listed to speak on the bill this week, which will take up to 20 hours or at least two days to get through.
Labor has offered to extend sitting hours late into the night or cut speeches back to 10 minutes to speed-up the process.
Amendments will then be considered, which could take another two days, before a final vote is held.
Politicians have just four sitting days to finalise the bill, if it needs to be sent back to the Senate this year.
