Another season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is coming to a close, but there’s plenty more Ru poppin’ up on your TVs outside of his VH1 competition series. RuPaul’s talk show launches in select markets June 10 for a three-week trial run, and now we know when his upcoming comedy series, AJ and the Queen, is scheduled to hit Netflix.

“AJ and the Queen is a show on Netflix, that comes out in January, that was created by Michael Patrick King and myself,” Ru revealed to Entertainment Tonight on the floor of DragCon L.A. this past weekend.

“It is the most challenging thing I’ve ever done because it’s acting like a real human. Usually in acting roles I play the gay best friend or the neighbor. This is a fully rounded human being with all of the emotions,” he explains. “We shot that for five months. We were in the writers room for two months. I had to memorize pages and pages of dialogue. It was a challenge, but I’m so proud of it.”

RuPaul will serve as a writer and executive producer alongside King, the Emmy-winning Sex and the City showrunner also known for his work on The Comeback and 2 Broke Girls, NewNowNext reported last year.

The 10-episode hourlong comedy stars Ru as Ruby Red, “a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway,” according to an official synopsis.

“As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.”

Chloe drag impressionist and Bright Colors and Bold Patterns star Drew Droege has even dropped a couple tidbits about the show. As a guest on the latest episode of Vulture’s Drag Race recap podcast, What the Tuck?, Droege revealed he was a writer on AJ and the Queen.

“It’s going to be magical,” he said. “People are going to lose their minds over how good of an actor Ru is. He’s not playing himself. He’s definitely playing an original character. We have a lot of Drag Race alum and incredible huge stars [on the show] as well.” As if we weren’t excited enough already!

It was previously announced that Josh Segarra (On Your Feet!) will play Hector, Ruby’s boyfriend, “who has a dark and dangerous side.” Matthew Wilkas (Gayby) has been cast in a recurring role as a hot cop.

AJ and the Queen is scheduled to hit Netflix January 2020.
