Demi Lovato Opens Up About How She Came Out to Her Parents
What so proudly we hailed!
Following her emotional comeback performance at the Grammys, Demi Lovato, who will sing the national anthem this Sunday during Super Bowl LIV in Miami, was a guest this week on Radio Andy, Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM channel.
The 27-year-old singer, who has openly struggled with addiction, revealed in her 2017 YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated, that she is open to dating men and women. She has declined to further label herself, declaring, “I love who I love.”
“Well, I’m still figuring it out,” she told Cohen when asked about her sexuality. “I didn’t officially tell my parents that I saw myself ending up possibly with a woman, too, until 2017. It was actually, like, emotional but really beautiful.”
“After everything was done, I was, like, shaking and crying,” Lovato continued. “I’ve just felt overwhelmed. But I have such incredible parents. They were so supportive.”
Lovato’s 2015 bicurious anthem may have actually helped her stepfather process the news.
“My dad was like, ’Yeah, obviously!’ And I was like, ’Whoa, okay, dad,’” she recalled. “He said, like, ’Hello? ’Cool for the Summer!” And I was like, ’Okay, I get it.’”
“But my mom was the one that I was, like, super nervous about, but she was just like, ’I just want you to be happy.’ That was so beautiful and amazing, and I’m… so grateful.”
“I don’t know what my future looks like,” Lovato told Cohen about her plans to start a family. “I don’t know if I’m going to have kids this year or in 10 years. I don’t know if I’m going to do it with a partner or without. Because women, we don’t need partners to… you know? Amen!”
Lovato is currently guest-starring as Jenny, Will’s surrogate, on NBC’s Will & Grace. She will next appear in the Netflix comedy Eurovision.
A vocal LGBTQ ally who has raised thousands of dollars for GLAAD, Lovato revealed at Logo’s inaugural Trailblazers Honors in 2014 that she had a gay grandfather. She received the Vanguard Award at the 2016 GLAAD Media Awards.
