Hannah Gadsby Has Some Regrets in New “Douglas” Trailer

News

Netflix has released a new trailer for Douglas, the out comedian’s highly anticipated follow-up to her previous special, Nanette, and it’s every bit the dry, darkly funny Gadsby fans have come to know and love.

ICYMI, Nanette saw Gadsby spin some of her personal traumas, including past abuse, into a standout comedy special. The show hit Netflix in 2018 and won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2019, prompting catapulting Gadsby, an Aussie, into the spotlight internationally. It also scored her a book deal for a memoir, Ten Steps to Nanette, with the Australian publisher Allen & Unwin.

“Had I known how wildly popular trauma was going to be in the context of comedy, I might’ve budgeted my shit a bit better,” Gadsby tells the audience in the trailer for Douglas, to rapturous applause. “But I went and put all trauma eggs into one basket like a fucking idiot, and now, here we are.”

Speaking to NewNowNext’s Michael Musto last summer, Gadsby revealed that her new special addresses “life after trauma.”

“It’s a much happier and joyful show than Nanette,” she added. “I think it’s important to see there’s a life after trauma, particularly after what happened with Nanette—my story was heard, including the more poisonous parts of my experience with trauma. I’m not defined by my trauma. … I hope my work has some kind of positive effect on the minds of people who’ve faced similar traumas. You don’t really get to hear our traumas in a more complex way in popular culture. It’s one of the things I’m most proud of with Nanette, that it’s resonated with such a wide audience.
